Karnataka Legislative Council member SL Bhojegowda has sparked a massive row after he claimed that he got at least 2,800 dogs poisoned to address the issue of strays on the streets.
While addressing the house on Tuesday, the Janta Dal (Secular) leader demanded that a “petition be filed in the Supreme Court… let Karnataka be the first in India to ask the Supreme Court to act against dogs".
He claimed that he killed over 2,500 dogs and buried them under trees to serve as natural compost when he was the chairperson of Chikkamagaluru municipal body.
“During my tenure as the chairperson of the City Municipality Council, we killed 2,800 dogs and buried them under trees to serve as natural compost," Bhojegowda said during a discussion on the stray dog issue in the council, as reported by Kannada Prabha.
He said the dogs were fed poisoned meat.
He argued that the stray dog menace affects the children of the poor.
“Children of judges, ministers and legislators, who travel by cars and other vehicles, may not be affected. But children from poor families, who walk to school, face the danger of being attacked by stray dogs. The menace is prevalent even in Bengaluru’s Cubbon Park," he said.
The matter had echoed in the Karnataka assembly following attacks on two college students in Bengaluru. The two MSc students at Bengaluru’s Ambedkar School of Economics University had to be hospitalised.
His shocking claims came days after the Supreme Court issued directive on relocating stray dogs in the Delhi-NCR region.
While hearing a suo motu case into rising dog-bite incidents in the national capital region, the apex court on Monday issued strong directions to the Delhi civic body to round up stray dogs, sterilise them, and move them permanently to shelters, noting that the order should be enforced strictly to make New Delhi and its adjoining National Capital Region (NCR) safe.
Calling the stray dog menace “extremely grim", the top court ordered the authorities to permanently relocate all strays from streets to shelters “at the earliest", and warned of strict action against anyone obstructing the drive.
The bench also instructed civic bodies to build shelter capacity for at least 5,000 dogs as an immediate step, hire staff for sterilisation and vaccination, install CCTV in shelters, create a helpline for bite reports, and consider a dedicated task force.
This ruling applies to Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad, and covers both sterilised and unsterilised animals.
