Passengers travelling on the Lucknow–Barauni Express were in for an unusual surprise when their complaint about low cooling in the AC coach led to the discovery of an illicit liquor consignment. The incident occurred during a routine journey this week, when travellers in one of the air-conditioned coaches reported that the cooling system was not functioning properly.

The train, which connects Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow with Barauni in Bihar, made an unscheduled stop for technical inspection after railway staff received multiple complaints from passengers.

Technicians Find Hidden Stock in AC Duct

A team of railway technicians boarded the train to investigate the cooling issue. On inspecting the AC ducts, they discovered that the airflow was being blocked. When the panel was opened, the cause became clear—several cartons of illicit liquor had been carefully packed and stashed inside the duct space.

Officials believe the smugglers used the AC duct as a hiding spot to avoid detection during regular luggage checks. The quantity of liquor seized is yet to be officially confirmed, but initial estimates suggest a sizable consignment, packed in sealed bottles and little cartons.

Railway Protection Force Steps In

Following the discovery, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) were immediately informed. The illicit liquor was confiscated and the coach was thoroughly checked to ensure no additional contraband was hidden elsewhere.

Bihar’s Strict Prohibition Laws

Bihar has enforced total prohibition on the sale and consumption of alcohol since April 2016, with strict penalties for violations. While aimed at curbing alcohol abuse and related crimes, the ban has also led to a surge in smuggling activities. Traffickers often use innovative methods, including hiding liquor in vehicles, cargo, and even passenger trains, to sneak alcohol into the state.

The incident drew a mix of shock and humour on social media. One user sarcastically suggested, “Solution: Put the refrigerator in the AC coaches of trains so that passengers get chilled beer." Another commented, “Wow! What a jugaad. If you had used this much brain for something worthwhile, you could have done something good. But the brain was used in liquor smuggling."

Authorities are examining whether the consignment was meant for delivery within Bihar or en route to other destinations. Preliminary suspicion points to an organised smuggling racket using long-distance trains to transport alcohol into dry or restricted regions.
