The Sri Sathya Sai district police on Saturday held a special awareness drive at Bullasamudram village of Madakasira mandal to celebrate Civil Rights Day, highlighting the importance of constitutional rights and social equality.

Superintendent of Police V. Ratna inaugurated the programme and addressed a gathering of students, villagers and police personnel. The SP said the Indian Constitution bestows upon every citizen the right to equality, freedom and protection from suppression and exploitation. She called for eliminating discrimination of all kinds to achieve true social justice. “Every citizen must understand and exercise their legal rights,” the SP said.

Ms. Ratna observed that during the past six months, awareness programmes connected to the importance of Civil Rights Day were organised across the district. She thanked officials, students, police and village elders for their cooperation in conducting the camps to educate the public. “It’s the responsibility of everyone to eliminate social inequalities, and this alone can create a society of true equality,” Mr. Ratna said.

Deploring the still-prevalent practice of child marriage, the SP said this social aberration was a punishable offense. Ms. Ratna highlighted a plethora of government welfare schemes and the economic sustenance programmes of NGOs for the underprivileged in society, vulnerable to the scourge of child marriages.

The SP called upon women, particularly those working and in colleges, to download the Shakti App on their mobiles, as this would protect them from any external attacks from the miscreants.

Senior officials from the Women and Child Welfare, police, revenue and panchayat raj departments attended the event.
