Eyewitnesses alleged that police made little effort to rescue him as he remained stuck between railings before the fire engulfed him

The impact caused the bike to burst into flames, leaving Mondal trapped and unable to escape.
Tensions ran high in Kolkata’s Salt Lake on Thursday after 25-year-old food delivery worker Rahul Mondal was burnt to death when his bike caught fire following a rear-end collision with a car.
The family of the deceased has accused the police of inaction in arresting the driver of the car that hit his two-wheeler.
The tragic incident took place near the New Bridge area in Salt Lake, where a private car reportedly collided with several vehicles before crashing into Mondal’s motorcycle from behind. The impact caused the bike to burst into flames, leaving Mondal trapped and unable to escape.
Eyewitnesses alleged that police made little effort to rescue him as he remained stuck between railings before the fire engulfed him.
Mondal, a resident of Basanti in South 24 Parganas, was on a delivery run when the incident occurred. His family, devastated by the loss, has accused the police of delaying action.
They claimed the car’s registration number was clearly visible, yet the driver remained untraceable for over 12 hours after the crash.
Family members also alleged that when they went to lodge a complaint at the police station, they were denied entry and forcibly turned away. According to them, the police later wrote the complaint themselves and made an illiterate family member sign it without fully understanding the contents.
The family further said that both police and fire services arrived late at the scene, despite the accident taking place during heavy rain and in a crowded area. They criticised authorities for failing to secure the site properly, allowing the situation to spiral out of control.
The incident triggered local protests in Salt Lake and parts of North 24 Parganas. Angry residents clashed with the police, with some reportedly throwing stones. Officers responded by firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
According to Bidhannagar police, a case has been registered under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, as well as assault on police personnel.
“There is no arrest so far and investigation is on," a senior officer said, adding that a forensic team is expected to visit the site.
