An FIR has been registered against union minister and West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar by Kolkata police for allegedly making controversial and insulting remarks against sex workers.

According to police sources, a written complaint was filed by a woman at Burtolla police station in Kolkata after Majumder's controversial comments went viral on social media. Based on this complaint, a case was registered under section 79/352 of BNS on Sunday.

In her complaint, the woman mentioned that Sukanta Majumder uttered words intending the same to be heard publicly, thereby intending to insult the modesty of women of the Sonagachi area (red light area in Kolkata) with the intent to provoke a breach of public peace.

On Friday, when BJP state president Sukanta Majumder was stopped by Kolkata police on his way, he was heard slamming cops by telling them that they have reduced policing to the level of Sonagachi sex workers.

The comment made by the union minister was posted by ruling party TMC on social media and TMC leaders lashed out at him for his loose tongue, alleging that Majumder had insulted the sex workers of Sonagachi by making this comment.

Talking to India Today, Majumder said, "It was not my intention to insult the sex workers. I just wanted to say, even sex workers have a principle and ethics of work which Kolkata police and West Bengal police don't have."

"They have reduced their level and lost their credibility, led by the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee. This case has been registered against me by TMC for not being able to defeat me politically," he added.
