City gears up for its biggest ever Cyclothon

Kolkata is preparing to hit the streets on two wheels this November as the city readies for its biggest-ever Cyclothon, expected to draw over 3,000 participants. The event, themed “Ride for Change, Ride for Kolkata,” will take place on November 9 and aims to turn the city’s roads into a celebration of fitness, sustainability, and community spirit. From professional cyclists to students, families, and first-time riders, the Cyclothon invites participants of all ages to join in. The ride will feature multiple categories — including 70 km, 50 km, 25 km, and 10 km routes, along with a 5 km fun run for those without cycles — ensuring that everyone, regardless of skill level, has a place in the event. The day before, on November 8, participants will collect their bibs, T-shirts, and kits. Organisers said the event is not just about competition but about encouraging citizens to embrace cycling as a way to connect with their health, their environment, and each other. “We want Kolkata to rediscover the joy of cycling — not just as a sport, but as a way to live better,” said Honorary Race Director Krishna Prakash. Officials from the Sports Authority of India added that the Cyclothon builds on the momentum created by local and national initiatives promoting active, sustainable lifestyles, with the goal of making Kolkata one of India’s most cycling-friendly cities.

For many, the event is the natural extension of the growing weekend cycling culture that has taken root in the city. Over the past several months, hundreds have participated in regular Sunday rides, and the Cyclothon will bring that energy to a citywide scale. “Their consistency and enthusiasm have inspired this movement,” said Dongari Lakshman, Assistant Director at SAI’s regional centre in Kolkata. Safety remains a key focus for the organisers, with helmets, front and rear lights, and reflectors made mandatory.

Medical and technical teams will be stationed along the route, and participants will be provided with hydration support, medals, and post-ride refreshments. “Even those who don’t own a cycle can take part in the fun run — the idea is inclusivity,” said Meher Tiwari, one of the event directors. Police officials have also assured full support for smooth coordination and traffic management on race day. With registration fees kept minimal and online entries open until November 1, organisers are expecting an enthusiastic turnout. More than a race, the Cyclothon seeks to make a statement — that Kolkata is ready to embrace a healthier, cleaner, and more connected way of life. As the city prepares to “ride for change,” every pedal stroke will symbolise the push towards a more sustainable and community-driven future.
