Kozhikode district, which has been experiencing downpour over the past week, had a brief respite on Friday (May 30) as the rain subsided, though the sky remained cloudy. The district was under an orange alert on Friday, while a yellow alert was issued for Saturday (May 31). The longer dry spell has helped reduce waterlogging on most roads, easing the resultant traffic congestion.

However, several low-lying areas remain flooded. With rising water levels in the major rivers of the district, residents living along the banks have been put on high alert and advised to relocate if directed by authorities.

The water level in Poonoor Puzha, a tributary of the Korapuzha, has crossed the ‘above warning level’ mark. A yellow alert has been issued for flood risk in Korapuzha at its Kunnamangalam and Kollikkal monitoring stations.

Water levels are also rising in other rivers in the district, including the Kuttiady and Chaliyar, though they remain below the warning level.

Meanwhile, the water level in the Kakkayam reservoir on the Kuttiady river has been steadily rising, and an orange alert has been sounded. The shutters may be raised if the situation persists.

Coastal areas have been put on high alert due to rough sea conditions, and fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea. Boats remain anchored in harbours, and beach tourism has taken a hit, with tourists barred from entering beach areas.

Traffic on the upland highway, which had been suspended due to a landslip near Thalayad, has been partially restored.

Meanwhile, rain has also subsided considerably in Wayanad district. However, a yellow alert has been issued for the Kabani river at its Kakkavayal station, where the water level is currently above the warning level.
