Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph has demanded the dismissal of police officers found guilty of custodial assault against Youth Congress leader V.S. Sujith stating they are unfit to remain in service.

He said the two-year-old incident was both a violation of law and a criminal offence, warranting the registration of a case and a thorough investigation. The Crime Branch Additional Police Commissioner’s report which detailed the violence committed by the police, clearly pointed to culpability, yet no immediate action was taken. He said senior officers starting from Kunnamkulam SHO failed in their duty by not initiating legal proceedings and instead attempting to suppress the complaint.

Mr. Joseph also referred to the DIG’s report which criticised the dilution of punishments awarded to the guilty officers and recommended a review. “Suspension cannot be treated as punishment,“ he said, adding that both Kerala society and the Congress demand strict action.
