Russia stands ready to help Iran in the ongoing conflict with Israel; however, Tehran first has to clearly state what kind of help it wants, a Kremlin spokesperson said on Monday.

The assistance “depends on what Iran needs", Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters at a briefing, according to TASS, Russia’s state-run news agency.

“We have offered our mediation efforts. This is concrete. We have stated our position, which is also a very important form of support for the Iranian side. Going forward, everything will depend on what Iran needs at this moment," he said.

Peskov said that the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi would be able to inform Russian President Vladimir Putin about his proposals and vision of the current situation in the meeting.

The two leaders met in Moscow today, in which Putin condemned the attacks on Iran.

“This is an absolutely unprovoked aggression against Iran; it has no basis or justification. For our part, we are making efforts to provide assistance to the Iranian people," Putin said.

Araghchi thanked Putin for supporting Iran and said that Tehran is defending its sovereignty.

“These aggressive actions by Israel and the US are completely illegitimate and violate international rules and international norms. We are defending our sovereignty and country, and our defence is legitimate," he said.

On Sunday, President Trump announced that the US forces had bombed three Iranian nuclear sites — Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow, with the last one located inside a mountain.

Reports say six bunker-buster bombs were dropped on the Fordow site, while over two dozen Tomahawk missiles hit the other two locations.

The strikes have now placed the US directly in Iran’s line of retaliation and made it an active player in the Middle East conflict, which began with Israeli airstrikes on Iran on June 13.
