The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Green Brigade have strongly opposed the State Government’s move to privatise electricity supply in 19 districts.
In a press conference in Shivamogga, on Saturday (May 30, 2026), KRRS state president H.R. Basavarajappa said the organisation was opposed to the privatisation of power distribution.
The distribution network, comprising thousands of crores of rupees worth of sub-stations, feeders, machinery, and other infrastructure, was public property built over decades, and that handing it over to a private company would amount to transferring this asset to serve private interests.
Further, he opined that the privatisation would, gradually, put an end to the welfare schemes like free power supply to irrigation pumpsets, beneficiaries of Bhagya Jyothi, Kuteera Jyothi schemes. Besides that, the employees working for the electricity supply companies would lose jobs. He appealed to the government not to transfer power distribution to private companies.
