Residents of Chandrapadi Panchayat in Mayiladuthurai district have complained about the absence of street lights, particularly along key roads connecting the villages and nearby towns.

The panchayat comprises two villages — Chandrapadi and Chinoorpettai — on the district’s southern edge, near the Karaikal border. Residents depend on nearby towns in Karaikal or the Tharangambadi for essential services. However, the connecting roads lack street lights, making travel unsafe after 6 p.m.

“After 8 p.m., we avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary. The roads are dark, street dogs roam freely, and some people under the influence of alcohol ride recklessly from the Karaikal side. It is unsafe, especially for women and the elderly,” said Tamil Vani P., a resident of Chandrapadi.

Jagan S., another resident, said even the roads within the village are in poor condition, compounding the issue. “The roads are badly damaged, and with no lights, it is nearly impossible to walk safely at night,” he said.

Chandrapadi Panchayat is home to 784 families. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about the damaged internal roads and lack of street lights but action had not been taken so far.

An official from the Rural Development Department said he would look into the issue.
