Formula One world champion Lando Norris has been honoured with a street named after him near his hometown in England, after the 26-year-old bagged his maiden world title on Sunday, December 7, trumping Max Verstappen by just two points in a thrilling championship battle.

Norris clinched the Formula 1 championship after a third-place finish in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix bagged the points he required to seal the title.

Norris was honoured with a pedestrianised street named ‘Lando Lane’ at the Clark’s Village shopping outlet in Street, close to his hometown of Glastonbury.

Norris’ former go-karting coach, Rob Dodds, was among those present for the sign unveiling, describing the F1 champion’s win as an ‘amazing story’.

Dodds, who coached Norris from the age of seven, recalled that even back then, he was ‘showing a lot of promise’.

We are so proud of everything he has achieved and we thought he would do it at seven years old," Dan Close, deputy head teacher at Norris’ school of Millfield in Street, was quoted as saying by the BBC.

“I think we knew from a very early age that he was going to be something special. Every weekend, he used to go off and race and sometimes he would come back with trophies that were just as big as he was," Close added.

When he is a Formula 1 champion, I hope he remembers the member of staff who taught him to become a world beater," a report written about Norris from his Year 3 teacher reads.

Mr Close mentioned that the school plans to hold a major celebration in Norris’ honour after the Christmas holidays.

Norris, born in Bristol but raised in Somerset, has made his achievements meaningful for the local community.

“For someone who has spent most of his life here in Somerset, it is quite extraordinary. This road name is an inspiration for all young people, both here and in Somerset, to live their dreams and think big, just as Lando has done," Mohammed Saddiq, Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, said.
