The Government Vocational Higher Secondary School at Vellarmala, Wayanad, which was destroyed in the landslides in July 2024, will have its new building inaugurated on Monday (June 2) as the new academic year begins. The new building has been constructed on the premises of the Government Higher Secondary School in Meppadi, where the Vellarmala school has been functioning since the landslides. Modern classrooms and toilets were constructed under the aegis of the Builders’ Association of India (BAI).

The BAI had planned to construct 12 classrooms and 16 toilets for the school at a cost of ₹3 crore. While eight classrooms and 10 toilets have been completed, the remaining will be finished and handed over by the end of June. The six divisions of the high school with 250 students will now be transferred to the new building. The two extra rooms will be used for the staff room and laboratory.

National vice president of BAI N. Raghunathan will inaugurate the event on Monday in which the classrooms will be thrown open and the teachers of the high school that bagged 100% results in SSLC and the teachers of the higher secondary school that recorded 83% results in Plus Two will be honoured.

Besides the classrooms, BAI has also set up two water tanks, purifier units and a public address system at the school.
