A late-night drive to Murthal turned tragic when two cousins were burnt alive after their Fortuner SUV crashed into a truck and caught fire in outer Delhi’s Rani Bagh area in the early hours of Thursday.
According to the police, the accident took place around 3 am, when the Fortuner, carrying the victims, rammed into a truck moving ahead of it. The impact was so strong that the SUV’s front portion got stuck under the truck and was dragged for nearly half a kilometre before it went up in flames.
The victims, identified as Henry (20) from Meera Bagh and Dipanshu Chandela (21) from Paschim Vihar, were trapped inside and died on the spot. Their families later identified the bodies.
A call regarding the accident was received by the Rani Bagh Police Station around 3.10 am, following which police and fire officials rushed to the spot. Fire tenders were deployed to douse the blaze, but by the time the flames were brought under control, both victims had succumbed to their injuries.
A family member told NDTV that the two cousins had left home around 2:30 am to have dinner at Murthal, a popular late-night food destination on the outskirts of Delhi.
The truck driver, who has been detained, told police he was travelling from Mundka to Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar when the SUV crashed into his vehicle from behind
Police have filed a case and started an investigation. Officers said they are waiting for a mechanical inspection report to confirm whether speeding or any technical fault led to the accident.
Family members shared that Henry was studying for a BBA degree in Pune, while his cousin Dipanshu was also pursuing a BBA course in Rohini. Henry’s father works in the mobile tower installation business, and Dipanshu’s father is a local property dealer.
Police said further investigations are in progress to establish the exact cause of the crash.
