A horrifying act of violence has sent shockwaves through Kanpur, as 22-year-old LLB student Abhijeet Singh Chandel was brutally attacked with a cleaver, leaving him fighting for his life. The savage assault left deep head wounds, severed fingers, and exposed intestines.
Abhijeet, a first-year LLB student at Kanpur University, went to a medical store around 9 pm on Saturday to purchase medicines. What should have been a routine errand turned into a nightmarish ordeal when a heated argument broke out with the shop owner, Amar Singh, allegedly over payment.
The situation spiralled out of control as Amar’s brother Vijay Singh and their associates, Prince Raj Srivastava and Nikhil, joined the confrontation.
Witnesses say the attackers repeatedly struck Abhijeet with a cleaver, splitting open his head and abdomen. His intestines protruded from the wound, and two of his fingers were severed. Covered in blood, Abhijeet collapsed on the road, while the attackers fled the scene.
FAMILY RACES AGAINST TIME TO SAVE HIM
Frantic after receiving the news, family members tied his intestines with a cloth and rushed him to four different hospitals. Due to the severity of his injuries, each initially refused admission.
Regency Hospital finally accepted him, where doctors performed a two-hour surgery, stitched 14 sutures on his head, and attempted to reattach his severed fingers.
ALLEGATIONS OF POLICE CONNECTIONS
Abhijeet’s mother, Neelam Singh Chandel, alleged that the attackers enjoy police protection and have filed a false extortion and robbery case against her injured son to divert attention. She also claimed that one of the accused, Prince Raj Srivastava, has a criminal record and is facing charges of extortion and land grabbing at Kakadeo police station.
POLICE RESPONSE
ACP Ranjeet Kumar confirmed that cases have been registered on both sides. “An FIR was lodged based on the initial complaint, and later we received a report from the other party as well. Both complaints are under investigation, and action will be taken accordingly,” he said.
