Legislative Council members pay tributes to Shivashankarappa

Members of the Legislative Council paid tributes to senior Congress leader and sitting MLA Shamanur Shivashankarappa here on Monday.

Chairman Basavaraj Horatti, Leader of the House N.S. Bosaraju, Leader of Opposition Chalavadi Narayanaswamy and other members recalled the contributions made by Shivashankarappa towards the development of Davangere as an educational hub and appreciated his entrepreneurial skills.

Mr. Horatti, said that Shivashankarappa started many educational institutions and entered politics through the urban local body.

He was elected to the Legislative Assembly six times and to the Lok Sabha once. He will be remembered for his contributions to the State during his long career.

Janata Dal(S) MLC Bhoje Gowda recalled his interactions with Shivashankarappa over the years and expressed that he during his public life remained committed to serving society.

He also shared an anectode in which the late Congress leader suggested a student aspiring to become a doctor serve the rural public.

BJP member C.T. Ravi said that Shivashankarappa fought illiteracy by starting educational institutions, countered ill-health by setting up hospitals and also worked to alleviate poverty.

Minister for Food and Civil Supplies K.H. Muniyappa recalled his long-time friendship with the Congress leader and stated that the veteran leader provided free seats in his institutions for many poor students.

Energy Minister K.J. George, Higher Education Minister M.C. Sudhakar, Congress members Ivan D’souza, Manjunath Bhandari, Nagaraj Yadav, BJP members N. Ravi Kumar, P.H. Poojar, Pradeep Shettar and others spoke on the occasion.

Mr. Horatti adjourned the House for the day, as many Ministers and legislators planned to travel to Davangere to pay their tributues to the Congress leader.
