For Maria Alejandra, a resident of Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, witnessing the two destructive earthquakes was equivalent to watching a “horror movie".
Within 39 seconds, two earthquakes –– measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude –– shook Venezuela, damaging buildings in the capital, resulting in casualties, and triggering tsunami alarms across parts of the Caribbean.
The twin quakes are said to be the most powerful to hit the country in over a century. As of now, 32 deaths and 700 injuries have been reported. However, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has said the final number of casualties could go up to 1,00,000.
“There was a cloud of smoke that wouldn’t let us see. And when we went downstairs, the scene was like a horror movie. We had to climb over the rubble and everything," Alejandra told Reuters.
