Lionel Messi’s GOAT India Tour 2025 hits Mumbai with Inter Miami stars Luis Suárez and Rodrigo de Paul, under World Cup-level security after Kolkata chaos.

Lionel Messi’s India tour rolled into Mumbai on Sunday — and this time, there was no room for chaos.
The football icon arrived in the city around noon under “World Cup-level" security, marking Day 2 of his four-city GOAT India Tour 2025. After the scenes that unfolded in Kolkata, Mumbai authorities weren’t taking chances.
Messi headed straight to the Taj Colaba for a brief break before moving to the Cricket Club of India (Brabourne Stadium), where he is set to attend a Padel GOAT Club event, followed by a star-studded celebrity football match. Later in the evening, the Argentine legend is expected at the Wankhede Stadium around 5 pm, the marquee stop of the Mumbai leg.
Accompanied by Inter Miami teammates Luis Suárez and Rodrigo de Paul, Messi’s movements are being tightly monitored. More than 2,000 police personnel have been deployed across Brabourne and Wankhede, with watchtowers, barricades, public announcement systems, and strict entry restrictions in place. Water bottles, metal objects and coins have been banned inside venues.
“After what happened in Kolkata, we have implemented World Cup-level security arrangements," a police official confirmed.
Kolkata chaos forces rethink
Messi’s tour began with overwhelming excitement in Kolkata — and quickly spiralled. Thousands flocked to Salt Lake Stadium hoping for a glimpse of the World Cup winner, but limited access and visibility sparked frustration. Parts of the venue were vandalised, forcing organisers to cut the visit short and rush Messi out early.
The disappointment left a sour taste, prompting authorities in Mumbai to tighten security drastically.
Hyderabad restores the vibe
The tour, however, found its rhythm again in Hyderabad. Messi interacted closely with fans, joined a friendly football session, and even shared the pitch with Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy — a moment that brought back the celebratory spirit the tour promised.
Now in Mumbai, with lessons learned and security doubled, the city is ready — carefully, tightly, and loudly — to welcome the greatest footballer of a generation.
