From organising fake weddings for their favourite dolls to arranging funerals for them, the war in Gaza has significantly transformed the way children play and, needless to say, the impact of the trauma has defined a whole generation.
A video shared by a Palestinian content creator captures a heartbreaking scene, where five children begin a funeral procession, with their tiny hands holding a makeshift stretcher. On it lies a doll, naked and covered with dust.
The children walk slowly, carefully lifting the small stretcher over their heads. This game is, of course, not born out of their imagination. Rather, it reflects the damage they’ve grown up witnessing around themselves — the loss of a loved one, mourning, and goodbyes.
At an age meant for joys and mischiefs, the little children in Gaza are consistently seeing trauma and grief.
Watch
Instead of playing hide and seek, the children are busy organising fake funerals for their beloved toy, with the doll mirroring the loss they’ve lived down with.
The game carries a subtle yet painful reminder of the scenes they watched, the grief they experienced, and the pain they’re too young to understand but are well-familiar with.
Netizens React
“Shame on us. Saw the post on the eve of Good Friday. Crucification continues. Crucification of childhood dreams, innocence and future. Can we preach peace to these children?" one user wrote.
Another user commented, “A whole generation of lost childhood, lost innocence, and a lifetime of carrying trauma IF they survive that long."
The Human Cost of War
The human cost of the war on Gaza has been devastating. According to a report by The Guardian, citing the Lancet Global Health medical journal, over 75,000 people were killed in the first 16 months of the two-year war in Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched massive strikes against Israel.
Between October 7, 2023, and January 5, 2025, a total of 42,200 women, children and elderly people were killed in the conflict.
Meanwhile, Gaza is under a fragile ceasefire, agreed last October.
