A 35-year-old doctor has been arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year-old female patient at a private medical college in Madhya Pradesh’s Dewas district, police said on Thursday. Another case of sexual assault has also been lodged in connection with an unidentified man entering a girl’s hostel room on the same campus and allegedly trying to rape her.

According to the police, the doctor, identified as Roopam Jain, also a faculty member, allegedly raped the girl at his residence on the campus of the Amaltas Institute of Medical Sciences on Tuesday after calling her for a check-up.

Dewas Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Harinarayan Batham told The Hindu that Dr. Jain was arrested on Wednesday based on a complaint by the girl and has been sent to judicial custody.

“The girl had met him about one and a half months ago when she visited the hospital with her parents. He had called her on Tuesday for some check-up, took her to his residence and raped her,” Mr. Batham said, adding that the girl narrated the ordeal to her parents immediately after incident.

Mr. Batham said the second incident took place on Wednesday night when an intruder entered the room of a second year girl student through an air-conditioning duct when she was sleeping.

“The man threatened the girl with a knife and tried to rape her. She pretended to faint, asked for water, and ran for help as soon as he moved away from her,” the officer said, adding that the accused fled the scene before other students and security could nab him.

He said separate cases have been lodged in both cases under relevant sections of the BNS, while the POCSO Act has also been invoked in the first case.

He added that several teams have been formed and at least a Deputy SP, five station in-charges and 25 personnel have been deployed to nab the second accused. The police are also scouring through several CCTV footage inside and around the campus.

Meanwhile, students from the college staged a demonstration and blocked a nearby highway, and moved only after assurances of a strict and swift action from senior police officers.

Following the students’ protest, the college administration also suspended a warden posted at the hostel.
