Madakasira MLA M.S. Raju has found himself at the centre of a controversy following his remarks linking the social progress of Dalits to the Constitution drafted by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar rather than to religious scriptures.
At the inauguration of Ambedkar’s statue in Madakasira three days ago, the MLA observed that the lifestyles of Dalits improved due to constitutional rights and not because of the teachings of Hindu, Muslim or Christian scriptures. The remarks went viral after a section of social media users circulated the video, sparking sharp reactions.
BJP senior leader Nagothu Ramesh Naidu demanded that Raju step down as a member of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Board, stating that his comments had hurt religious sentiments.
Responding to criticism on Thursday through a video, the MLA clarified that his comments had been taken out of context by the YSRCP and that he had intended to highlight Ambedkar’s pivotal role in ensuring equality and justice through the Constitution. “I only meant that the Constitution gave Dalits opportunities for progress. I never disrespected any religion,” he said, appealing to the “Hindu brothers” not to believe in the false propaganda of the YSRCP.
Mr. Raju further emphasised that he was a Dalit and a practising Hindu, describing himself as a devotee of Lord Venkateswara, and reiterated that his statement was made in a positive spirit.
