Sources say those who have performed well may be retained, while those who fall short could be asked to step aside.

The Maharashtra cabinet could soon undergo a detailed performance audit, likely to be initiated in the next few months, according to top sources within the state government. A reliable insider told News18 that, in an effort to make ministers more accountable and result-oriented, the Mahayuti government is considering a thorough evaluation of the work done by all cabinet and junior ministers.
The source further revealed that the audit will assess ministers on multiple parameters, including their departmental performance, execution of key schemes, and public connect. Those who have performed well may be retained, while those who fall short could be asked to step aside.
Recently, the Gujarat government conducted a similar review, after which several ministers were asked to resign due to poor performance. In Maharashtra, a comparable exercise is expected once the government completes one year in office. However, unlike Gujarat, sources suggest that a complete cabinet reshuffle is unlikely. Instead, a selective overhaul may take place, where new and promising faces could find a place in the cabinet.
A BJP MLA from Mumbai, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “Such reviews are part of the BJP’s working culture. Accountability is essential in governance, and our party believes in giving opportunities to capable and performing leaders."
Senior Shiv Sena (Shinde camp) leader and Mumbai MLA Prakash Survey also welcomed the idea of a review. “The Chief Minister’s Office must already have detailed data on every department and minister. If a reshuffle happens based on performance, it will be a good opportunity for new faces who have been waiting for their turn. Change is important and necessary," he said.
The Devendra Fadnavis-led government will complete one year in office on December 5, 2024. Since taking charge, Fadnavis has been emphasising measurable performance and transparency in governance. Each cabinet minister was earlier asked to prepare a 100-day program outlining their department’s goals and targets. Based on their execution, the Chief Minister held periodic review meetings and ranked ministers according to performance.
Sources added that the upcoming audit may examine ministers on various key indicators such as the utilisation of departmental funds, new investments and projects brought to the state, public engagement, image-building efforts, and responsiveness during the assembly sessions, including the number of questions answered. Junior ministers are also expected to undergo the same review process.
If implemented, this audit could mark a significant shift toward performance-driven politics in Maharashtra. With the government nearing its one-year milestone, this internal review could pave the way for a sharper, more efficient cabinet — one aligned with public expectations and future electoral challenges.
