In a major move to protect the rights of construction workers in Maharashtra, State Labour Minister Adv Aakash Fundkar has ordered strict action against middlemen involved in fraudulent registrations and financial exploitation. Acting on complaints received from workers and public representatives across the state, the government is setting up district-level vigilance teams to carry out targeted inspections and curb irregularities.
The complaints mainly relate to agents using fake documents to register workers under government welfare schemes and extorting money for services like registration and kit distribution. To ensure fair and transparent implementation of these welfare initiatives, the minister has directed that vigilance squads be established in every district, but each squad will operate outside its home district to ensure neutrality and unbiased investigations.
Each vigilance team will focus on identifying fake documents, illegal demand for money during registration, and misuse of welfare benefits through false certifications. Offenders found guilty will face criminal cases and stringent legal action.
To support this effort, regional offices have been allowed to hire vehicles on rent for mobility, and funds for necessary inspection-related expenses will be provided through administrative budgets.
Every vigilance team will be headed by the district office chief and will be required to submit monthly reports. These reports will be compiled by divisional heads and submitted to the board headquarters along with their remarks.
The first phase of this special inspection drive will run until July 10, 2025. During this period, anyone with complaints related to fraudulent practices can approach the vigilance teams directly. A minimum of one inspection per team per month has been mandated, with consolidated reports to be submitted regularly to ensure continued monitoring.
“This campaign will send a strong message to those exploiting poor construction workers and ensure their rightful access to government schemes," said Labour Minister Aakash Fundkar, expressing confidence that this initiative will put an end to widespread fraud and exploitation.
The state’s move reflects a strong commitment to clean up the registration process and safeguard the interests of workers who form the backbone of Maharashtra’s construction sector.
