A young doctor from Maharashtra’s Satara district, who died by suicide after accusing two police officers for sexual assault and mental harassment, was forced to prepare false medical reports, her cousin alleged.
The doctor, who was posted at Phaltan Sub-District Hospital, ended her life late on Thursday night, and her death sparked a massive political storm in the state. She alleged in a suicide note that she was sexually assaulted and mentally harassed by two police officers for weeks before her death.
The suicide note, found written on the doctor’s hand, names a police inspector, Gopal Badne, accusing him of raping her multiple times. It also mentions another officer, Prashant Bankar, alleging that he mentally harassed her. Badne was suspended on the orders of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The victim’s cousin alleged that the doctor faced political pressure to conduct a false post-mortem. “There was a lot of police and political pressure on her to make wrong mortem reports. She tried to complain about it. My sister should get justice," the cousin told ANI.
The cousin said the doctor had filed a complaint around two to three months ago, but no action was taken. The case has sparked outrage in Satara, with demands for a high-level investigation and the immediate suspension of the accused officers.
The victim’s uncle also alleged that she was under immense pressure to alter a post-mortem report in an ongoing case, allegedly on the orders of the police department itself.
Political Storm In Maharashtra
The suicide has sparked a massive political row in Maharashtra. BJP leader and the President of the party’s women wing in the state, Chitra Wagh, called it “an extremely tragic and heart-wrenching incident" and assured of proper action against the perpetrators.
Maharashtra Women’s Commission chief Rupali Chakankar, meanwhile, said, “We have taken cognisance of the matter and ordered Satara Police to take strict action against the accused. Teams have been deployed to hunt the accused. Those involved in this unfortunate incident will not be spared."
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP- Ajit Pawar) also called for strict action against the accused. “Teams have been sent to arrest the accused. Strictest action should be taken as there is a zero tolerance policy towards atrocities against women," NCP leader Anand Paranjape told NDTV.
State Congress leader Vijay Namdevrao Wadettiwar hit out at the ruling Mahayuti government over the suicide note. “When the protector becomes the predator! The duty of the police is to protect, but if they themselves are exploiting a female doctor, how will justice be served? Why was no action taken when this girl had previously lodged a complaint? The Mahayuti government repeatedly shields the police, which is leading to an increase in police atrocities," he said.
