Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal is set to miss the remaining games of 2025 with a knee issue. According to a club statement, medical services diagnosed him with ‘loose joint in his right knee’. He’ll now undergo arthroscopy or a key-hole surgery, which usually requires around two months of recovery, depending on the severity.
Arthroscopy is a simple, relatively less invasive surgery used to find and fix joint problems. The doctor makes small cuts and puts in a tiny camera called an arthroscope to see inside the joint on a screen. Special tools are then used through other small openings to repair any damage.
However, it is the same knee in which he ruptured two ligaments and a tendon in October 2024, which forced him to miss the remainder of the last season.
“Following tests carried out on our captain, Dani Carvajal, by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a loose joint in his right knee. Carvajal will undergo arthroscopy," the Spanish giants said in a statement.
Arsenal’s Kai Havertz underwent a similar injury in late August and is expected to make a comeback sometime in mid-November.
It’s an unlucky blow for Carvajal, coming in his first appearance since September, on Sunday in the 2-1 El Clásico win over Barcelona. He had recovered from a calf injury sustained during the 5-2 loss to Atletico Madrid last month, which made him miss several important games, too.
Fede Valverde, a midfielder by trade, started at right-back against Barca, like he has done several times before. Thankfully for the Spanish giants, Trent Alexander-Arnold has just returned following an injury layoff and could come straight into the 11 in a few games’ time.
Carvajal is involved in a post-match brawl
After El Clásico, Carvajal confronted 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, who had mocked Madrid before the match, sparking a brawl. Thibaut Courtois shoved Yamal, and Vinícius Júnior joined in, too.
Barca’s Frenkie de Jong criticized Carvajal for publicly humiliating his Spain teammate instead of speaking privately.
“If Carvajal wanted to speak to Lamine, he could do so in private," said De Jong. “If he thinks he shouldn’t do things like (the social media comments) he could call him. They’re teammates (with Spain), they know each other. Why do you have to make a scene on the pitch?"
