According to ESPN's Shams Charania, New York Knicks veteran point guard Malcolm Brogdon is abruptly walking away from the NBA. Having battled for a roster role on the Knicks over nine seasons, Brogdon is retiring.
Brogdon, 32 and second-round pick in 2016 NBA Draft and winner of the Sixth Man of the Year award in the 2022–2023 season, is fighting for the remaining roster spot with Landry Shamet and Garrison Mathews.
But recently he decided to retire from his career abruptly.

Following nine seasons in the NBA, New York Knicks shooting guard Malcolm Brogdon announced on Wednesday that he is retiring from basketball and putting his shoes away for good. Malcolm Brogdon -- who was expected to arrive with the Knicks prior to the regular season started -- informed Knicks officials on Wednesday that he is contemplating retirementAnnouncing the news, Shams Charania said: “Just in: After nine NBA seasons, New York Knicks guard Malcolm Brogdon has decided to retire from basketball, he tells ESPN. Brogdon became the 2017 Rookie of the Year and 2023 Sixth Man of the Year after being drafted No. 36 in 2016…”Brogdon wrote in a statement to ESPN:"Today, I officially begin my transition out of my basketball career… I have proudly given my mind, body, and spirit to the game over the last few decades.
With the many sacrifices it took to get here, I have received many rewards..."
He continued:"I am deeply grateful to have arrived to this point on my own terms and now to be able to reap the benefits of my career with my family and friends. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have had a place in my journey."Charania reports that Brogdon has been thinking about retirement and communicated this to the Knicks on Wednesday. He was expected to be on the team for the full season. It isn't clear why he decided to retire so late in training and pre-season, but this presents an opportunity to the Knicks, who did not have a second reliable option at the point guard position to step in for Jalen Brunson.

Brogdon, the 36th pick in the 2016 draft, was the 2017 Rookie of the Year for the Bucks and the 2023 Sixth Man of the Year for the Boston Celtics. He spent three years in Milwaukee and three years in Indiana, and spent one year each in Boston, Portland, and Washington.
Brogdon was to be part of the Knicks' final roster after recording 12.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists for the Washington Wizards during the previous season. He had, however, been weighing retirement and notified Knicks executives of the same on Wednesday.The 36th overall selection in the 2016 NBA Draft, Brogdon won the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 2017 and the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award in 2022–2023.
