Berhampur: A 58-year-old man and his 26-year-old son were arrested on Thursday for allegedly assaulting and threatening excise personnel by forcibly entering their office on Monday.Tofan Kumar Sahu and his son Sagar of Ankuli, along with two other persons, entered the excise office and demanded the release of Santosh Mandal, who was detained for his involvement in the illegal transportation of liquor. Excise personnel had seized 39 litres of IMFL from him at Gopalpur junction.During the ensuing altercation at the excise office, the accused allegedly attempted to kill an assistant sub-inspector of the excise department by attacking him with an iron rod.
The officer managed to escape but the glass on the table was damaged, police sources said.Earlier, the accused had verbally abused the mobile excise squad and two female excise personnel, police said. Based on complaints lodged by an excise officer, a case was registered at Baidyanath Pur police station on Tuesday, leading to the arrest of the father -son duo, said SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M. He said search was on to arrest other persons involved in the incident.
