Police arrested a 29-year-old man for chain snatching at Pogathota in Nellore on Monday. The accused was identified as Ch. Srinath, a resident of Surayapalem village in Podalakur mandal in the district.
According to the police, Srinath completed B. Tech and is currently working as an engineer in a private firm. He was allegedly involved in thefts after getting habituated to casino, online betting and gambling. He had committed thefts to clear his debts. Srinath had stolen seven motorcycles and snatched gold chains at two places.
On September 23, he reportedly snatched a gold chain from a 67-year-old woman, Sola Lakshmamma, while she was showing a portion of her house for rent. A case was registered at One-Town (Chinna Bazar) police station.
Circle Inspector (CI) Ch. Koteswara Rao and Sub-Inspector (SI) A. Ayyappa formed a special team and arrested the accused. They recovered two gold chains weighing about 8 grams and 40 grams respectively, and seven motorcycles worth ₹5.15 lakh from the accused.
Nellore Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajitha Vejendla appreciated the special team for nabbing the accused and announced a reward.
