Man Falls Into Manhole in Front of Mayor During Rain-Hit Area Visit
A sanitation worker fell into an open manhole during a drain-cleaning operation in Mumbai on Tuesday, with the incident taking place in front of Mayor Ritu Tawde during her inspection of rain-affected areas.
The incident occurred at Gandhi Market in Sion amid heavy rainfall and widespread waterlogging across the city.
Incident caught on camera
The worker was clearing garbage from a drain when he accidentally fell into an open manhole.
The incident was captured on camera and quickly drew attention as it happened while the Mayor was present at the location to assess the impact of the rains.
People present at the spot immediately rushed to help and managed to rescue the worker safely. The condition of the worker was not disclosed.

Mayor inspects rain-hit areas
The incident took place during Mayor Ritu Tawde’s visit to several areas affected by heavy rainfall and waterlogging.
Mumbai has been witnessing intense rain since overnight, leading to flooding in several low-lying localities and causing disruption to traffic movement across parts of the city.
As civic authorities continued efforts to manage waterlogging and clear drains, the accident at Gandhi Market highlighted concerns over safety measures during such operations.
Warning to civic officials
Following the incident, the Mayor expressed strong displeasure and pulled up civic officials present at the site. She warned that strict action would be taken against officials found neglecting safety protocols.
According to the Mayor, any ward officer found leaving manholes open could face suspension. The warning came as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation continued its response to the heavy rainfall and related civic challenges across Mumbai.
