COIMBATORE: A special court in Coimbatore has awarded life imprisonment to a man for murdering a transgender person in 2020. The court imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convict, identified as Rajesh, 29, of Nagapattinam. M Sangeetha, 59, a transgender entrepreneur and head of one of the transgender associations in Coimbatore district, was found murdered at her residence in Saibaba Colony on Oct 21, 2020. Police found her body in a plastic drum used for storing water after being alerted to a foul smell emanating from the house. Police arrested Rajesh, who was working in Sangeetha's catering unit. He murdered Sangeetha as she had denied him sexual favours.Police filed a chargesheet before the special court for trial of cases registered under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act. Judge K Vivekananthan pronounced the verdict on Friday.
