A 38-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh was arrested at Katpadi railway station in Vellore on Wednesday for posing as a Ticket Traveller Examiner (TTE).
The arrested person was identified as Hemath Rastogi, a native of U.P. Initial inquiry revealed that the victim Ali, 43, a native of Assam, was working as a construction labourer in Chittoor town in Andhra Pradesh. He came to the railway station to send off his friends to Assam.
After sending them off, Ali decided to book a ticket to Assam. As he approached the advance booking centre at the railway station, Rastogi intervened and offered Ali help to book his ticket. In return, Rastogi demanded ₹7,500 as commission.
Ali told police that he paid the money to Rastogi, who said that he would get a ticket for his mobile phone and left the spot. After waiting for a long time, Ali found that he had been cheated and complained to the Government Railway Police (GRP) at the railway station.
A police team found Rastogi on one of the platforms at the railway station. Police recovered ₹7,500, fake railway tickets and mobile phones from him. A case was registered, and Rastogi was lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. Further probe is under way.
