Manchester United reported a first-quarter net loss on Thursday due to reduced broadcasting revenue and ticket sales as the club is not participating in European competitions this season.

The club, based in Old Trafford, recorded a net loss of £6.6 million ($8.83 million) for the quarter ended September 30, compared to a profit of £1.4 million a year ago. Total revenue for the quarter decreased by 2%, while player and staff wages dropped by 8.2% due to job cuts.

CEO Omar Berrada stated that the difficult decisions made over the past year have led to a sustainably lower cost base and a more streamlined, effective organisation, positioning the club for better sporting and commercial performance in the long term.

“These robust financial results reflect the resilience of Manchester United as we make strong progress in our transformation of the club," said CEO Omar Berrada. “The difficult decisions we have made in the past year have resulted in a sustainably lower cost base and a more streamlined, effective organisation equipped to drive the club towards improved sporting and commercial performance over the long-term."

The club implemented job cuts and other cost-saving measures after six consecutive years of financial losses, highlighting the challenges faced by the 20-time English champions, who have underperformed both on and off the pitch.

Manchester United maintained its fiscal 2026 revenue forecast between £640 million and £660 million, with a core profit range of £180 million to £200 million.

Minority owner Jim Ratcliffe, who holds roughly a 29% stake and oversees football operations, has raised ticket prices, even though the club spent about £230 million in the summer transfer window and announced plans for a new £2 billion, 100,000-seat stadium.

The club’s absence from European competitions this season is affecting broadcasting revenue and increasing financial pressure, which has led to criticism from supporters during a period when the team has struggled to compete domestically.
