Mapusa market gets power cut notice for lack of hygiene

Mapusa: Mapusa fish market is staring at a shut down with the Mapusa urban health centre on Tuesday issuing notice to disconnect water and electricity connections to the complex after it failed to be cleaned in entirety despite repeated warnings.The urban health centre issued the notice under the Goa Public Health Act, 1985, owing to failure ofthe municility to resolve the persistent and serious public health nuisances despite repeated warnings.“Your office has not taken any measures to abate the nuisance highlighted,” the urban health centre said in a notice to the Mapusa Municipal Council.Dr Dinesh Parab, health officer at the Mapusa urban health centre, said that both connections will be snapped in seven days, and the premises will be sealed until there is complete compliance with cleanliness conditions.

In Oct, the muncipality narrowly averted the sealing of the fish and meat market after it carried out a massive clean-up following a final warning by the urban health department.After a Nov 10 inspection by health officials, the municipality’s officials assured to carry out regular maintenance and keep the market clean for vendors and visitors.Market committee chairperson Sainath Raul said 70-80% compliance has been achieved, while the remaining work will be carried with the assistance of the stakeholders concerned.The council has sought assistance from the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) to remove unused elevators and other machinery.
