Three people were arrested in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvarur for allegedly trespassing into a government primary school and vandalising the premises, the police said on Tuesday.

This comes after suspected contaminants were found in the school’s water tank on Monday, prompting the authorities to send the recovered samples for forensic analysis and register a case. The school is located in the Kariyankudi village.

There are 31 students, including 17 boys and 14 girls, at the primary school. The school staff and students discovered that the doors of the kitchen were broken, and cooking materials were missing. The trespassers also cooked and dined inside the premises, officials said. The lid of the plastic water tank was also found broken, from where thick materials resembling human faeces were recovered, suggesting that this could have been done deliberately.

Tiruvarur SP Karun Garad told Times of India that the evidence so far suggests that the incident is unlikely to be linked to communal reasons, as students from various communities and backgrounds study at the school.

“We suspect local miscreants may have been involved," the official said.
