Ahead of Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi’s visit to India, there are reports that New Delhi and Beijing are in talks to resume border trade of domestic goods after more than five years.

India on Thursday said it has “remained engaged" with China to “facilitate the resumption of border trade through all the designated trade points". China, meanwhile, said the two neighbours are “maintaining interactions at various levels".

This comes amid a strain in India’s ties with the Trump administration’s imposition of 50 percent tariff over its procurement of Russian crude oil.

The ministry of external affairs (MEA) said India is engaging with the Chinese side to resume border trade through Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, Shipki La in Himachal Pradesh and Nathu La in Sikkim – the designated trade points across the border between the two countries.

“We have remained engaged with the Chinese side to facilitate the resumption of border trade through all the designated trade points – namely Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, Shipki La Pass in Himachal Pradesh, and Nathu La Pass in Sikkim. If there are any updates, we will keep you informed," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a press briefing.

According to Global Times, in response to media inquiries over reports that Wang is visiting New Delhi on August 18 to meet national security adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval, the Chinese foreign ministry said the two countries are maintaining interactions at various levels.

“We stand ready to work with India to act on the important common understandings reached between the leaders of our two countries, maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges, cement political mutual trust, enhance practical cooperation, properly handle differences, and promote the sustained, sound, and steady development of China-India ties," ministry spokesperson Lin Jian was quoted, adding that details regarding the foreign minister’s visit will be released in due course.
