To mark Mahatma Gandhi’s 156th birth anniversary, Anupa Mehta Contemporary Art (AMCA) in Colaba is presenting the debut solo exhibition of contemporary artist Meenakshi Nihalani. Titled Seven Yards of Blue, the exhibition explores the enduring legacy of Gandhi’s Champaran Satyagraha through a deeply reflective visual language. Inspired by Gandhi’s letters and correspondence surrounding the historic 1917 movement, Nihalani’s work chronicles the resilience of indigo farmers who stood against colonial oppression. Through an immersive installation practice that merges textiles and sculptural forms, the artist transforms history into tactile expressions of resistance and renewal.

“The show is a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi during this very special month that celebrates his birth anniversary,” said Anupa Mehta, gallerist and curator.

“Meenakshi’s work allows us to reflect on the enduring relevance of resistance, justice, and self-reliance. It opens up conversations on how the spirit of Satyagraha continues to inform contemporary life.” The exhibition is supported by Hampi Art Labs, where Nihalani recently completed her artist residency. Her practice, rooted in material experimentation, examines socio-political narratives through layers of fabric, dye, and form—each element invoking the symbolic blue of indigo as both a colour of struggle and strength.

Seven Yards of Blue not only revisits a pivotal chapter in India’s independence movement but also reimagines it for a modern audience. The show invites visitors to engage with the emotional and historical textures of an era that reshaped the nation’s conscience. The exhibition is open to the public till October 25.
