Lionel Messi isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The Argentine superstar has officially agreed to a contract extension with Inter Miami, keeping him at the club through the 2028 MLS season, the team announced on Thursday.

The news, which had been circulating in MLS circles for months, comes just one day before Inter Miami’s playoff opener against Nashville SC on Friday, adding an extra buzz around the club’s postseason campaign.

From Game-Changer to Long-Term Leader

Messi originally joined Inter Miami midway through the 2023 MLS season, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal that was set to expire at the end of 2025.

His new contract extends that stay by three additional years, further cementing his role as the face of the club and, arguably, of Major League Soccer itself.

Since arriving in Florida, Messi has completely transformed the franchise, both on and off the field. Ticket sales, viewership, and global attention have skyrocketed, and his influence has helped turn Inter Miami from a struggling expansion side into a genuine contender.

Still Dominating at 38

At 38, Messi continues to defy time. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has been in vintage form, leading MLS in goals and assists and is widely expected to capture his second straight MLS MVP award.
