Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says Copilot reaches 20 million paid users; Accenture, Mercedes among key adopters

Satya Nadella has revealed that Microsoft’s Copilot AI tool is seeing strong growth in usage and adoption, despite ongoing perceptions that it is not widely used. Speaking during the company’s quarterly earnings call, Nadella said that Microsoft 365 Copilot now has 20 million paid enterprise seats.

Nadella said the company has seen a rise in large-scale deployments. The number of companies using more than 50,000 Copilot seats has quadrupled. He further revealed that firms such as Bayer, Johnson & Johnson, Mercedes-Benz and Roche each have more than 90,000 seats. Nadella also highlighted a recent deal with Accenture for over 740,000 seats, calling it “our largest Copilot win to date.”

Copilot usage and engagement rise: Satya Nadella

Addressing concerns around actual usage, Nadella said engagement levels are increasing.“Copilot queries per user were up nearly 20% quarter over quarter. To put this momentum in perspective, weekly engagement is now at the same level as Outlook,” he said. “This is like a daily habit of intense usage.”The company said this indicates users are interacting with Copilot as frequently as they use email.Nadella also said Copilot is not tied to a single AI model. “You now have access in chat to multiple models by default, with intelligent auto routing in agents with critique and counsel, you can use multiple models together to generate optimal responses,” he said.

Microsoft 365 Copilot supports models such as Anthropic’s Claude alongside other systems.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella: Agent mode drives Copilot adoption

The company said its “agent mode” is helping increase usage. This feature allows Copilot to complete multi-step tasks directly within apps like Word, Excel and PowerPoint.“As of last week, Agent mode is now the default experience across Copilot and Word Excel and PowerPoint,” Nadella said. “You now have a new way to delegate and complete work using Copilot.” Microsoft said the feature enables users to automate tasks and workflows inside documents, expanding how AI is used in daily work.
