Minakshi Hooda at World Boxing Championships (World Boxing)
Minakshi Hooda became the second Indian to win a gold medal at the World Boxing Championships 2025 in Liverpool on Sunday. The lanky 24-year-old defeated Kazakhstan’s Nazym Kyzaibay, who had won bronze at the Paris Olympics, 4-1 in the rematch of June-July’s World Cup final in Astana, where the local boxer had prevailed.
Minakshi, born to an auto-rickshaw driver in Rurki, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) constable, continued her remarkable streak of winning a medal at every international tournament she has entered.
The former Asian Championships and World Cup silver medallist registered a resounding 5-0 victory over Mongolia’s Lutsaikhany Altantsetse, the 2023 World Championships runner-up, in the 48kg semifinal, which is a non-Olympic weight class, at the M&S Bank Arena.
Jaismine Lamboria Wins Gold
Earlier, Indian women’s boxer Jaismine Lamboria (women’s 57kg) clinched a gold medal in her category by defeating Poland’s Szermeta Julia 4-1 on Saturday.
Olympic silver medallist from Paris 2024, Szermeta, started the match at a furious pace, landing counter-attacking blows amid chants of ‘Julia’ from the many Polish fans in the stands. However, this spurred Jaismine into action, who dominated from the second round onwards. She used her height advantage to control the contest and secure a 4-1 victory.
In the 80kg+ category, Nupur won a silver medal, losing to Poland’s Agata Kaczmarska in the final. The sizeable contingent of Polish fans celebrated as their fighter, despite giving up several inches in height, battled hard in close quarters and landed a decisive final blow in the last second to secure a 3-2 split decision.
The local fans cheered as Emily Asquith booked her place in the women’s 80kg final with a striking masterclass, achieving a 4-1 points decision victory over the more experienced Indian Pooja Rani. Asquith will compete for gold in tomorrow’s final. With this loss, Pooja settled for a bronze medal in the tournament.
