Minor Girl Gang-Raped In Karnataka’s Belagavi; BJP Slams Congress: ‘Threat To Women Safety’

A 15-year-old girl was allegedly abducted by six youngsters in Karnataka’s Belagavi and was subjected to repeated sexual assault, said officials aware of the case.

The perpetrators recorded the crime and used the video to blackmail the victim, said officials, adding that the offence took place between December 2024 to January 2025.

The case came to light when the parents of the victims learnt about the crime and reported it to the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) police station. Subsequently, an FIR was filed and a probe began.

According to the complaint, the victim was first taken in a car by one accused (the victim’s friend) to Windmill Hill at Muttyanatti village in December.

He then introduced her to five of his friends, who allegedly raped her, with one of them recording the incident on video.

In January, the accused took her to Khadi Machine Hill near Alatage, where three youths sexually assaulted her.

The crime came to the attention of the girl’s parents when they noticed changes in her behaviour and, after confronting her, discovered the abuse.

Police Commissioner Borase Bhushan Gulabrao stated that sensitive details of the case cannot be disclosed at this stage, adding that five of the accused are in custody while one is still absconding.

“She is a minor, a POCSO case has been registered. Can’t reveal any identities and in-depth details about the case," Gulabrao said.

BJP Slams Congress

The BJP slammed the ruling Congress, raising concerns over women’s safety in the state.

“Congress to power – a threat to the protection of women in Karnataka. A case has come to light in which six people gang-raped a minor girl in Belgaum and blackmailed her by videotaping the incident," the Karnataka BJP wrote in an X post.

The BJP further targeted Karnataka’s Minister of Women and Child Welfare, Lakshmi Hebbalkar, alleging that she failed to protect women in her home district.

“Dear Minister of Women and Child Welfare @laxmi_hebbalkar, since you became a minister, women in your home district have become completely unprotected. We demand that the culprits be arrested immediately and justice be served to the aggrieved young woman."

So far, the Karnataka Police have arrested five of the six accused. An investigation into the case is underway, said officials.
