Sima Devi protest outside Doomdooma police station
Dibrugarh: Two years after her youngest daughter disappeared from a Durga Puja pandal near her residence, Sima Devi (52), a resident of Doomdooma town in Tinsukia, staged a solitary demonstration outside Doomdooma police station on Thursday, demanding justice for her missing child.Clutching a photograph of her daughter Rashmi Shah, the anguished mother accused police of failing to solve the case and allowing the investigation to go cold.Eight-and-a-half-year-old Rashmi, daughter of Madan Shah and Sima Devi, disappeared on the morning of Oct 24, 2023, after going to play at a Durga Puja pandal. Despite initial public outrage and protests by local organisations, the case has made little progress since then.“I want justice for my missing daughter. It has been two years and I still don’t know where she is or what has happened to her. Police has failed us. Every day without my daughter is an agony. I need to know the truth,” Sima Devi said during her protest.“The world may have forgotten, but a mother never forgets. I will not give up until I find my daughter or know what has happened to her,” she said.Fighting back tears, the distraught mother appealed to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma him to intervene and help her locate her daughter.
“I am appealing to the CM to please help me find my child. A mother cannot rest until she knows her daughter is safe,” she said.Raising allegations against her neighbour, Shibu Thapa, Devi said, “When Rashmi went missing, police detained Shibu Thapa, our neighbour. But he was released after brief questioning. He shifted to Arunachal Pradesh soon after. I believe he abducted my daughter and police should interrogate him thoroughly so that the truth comes out.”When Rashmi first went missing, the incident sparked widespread protests in Doomdooma, with several organisations, including the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), taking out demonstrations and road blockades, demanding immediate action to trace the missing girl. However, as months have passed without any breakthrough, public attention has gradually waned.Doomdooma police is yet to issue any official statement regarding Sima Devi’s protest or the status of the investigation into Rashmi’s disappearance.
