MLA takes stock of rain damage in Virajpet; instructs officials to take up repair works

MLA for Virajpet A.S. Ponnanna visited the rain-affected areas in his constituency on Sunday and took stock of the extent of damage.

The retaining wall of the Morarji Desai Residential School near Betoli village in Virajpet Taluk was inspected as it had collapsed due to heavy rains last week.

The officials concerned from the Engineering Department were instructed to ensure its repairs. Mr. Ponnanna also cautioned that the surrounding compound wall abutting the retaining wall was at the risk of collapse and instructed that precautionary measures be taken to prevent such an eventuality owing to heavy rains in the coming days.

He also inspected the undergoing repair works near a school at Argi village. The engineers and contractors were directed to ensure quality in the civil work. He was also apprised of soil sliding on to the road leading to Ambedkar Bhavan and instructed the officials to get it cleared at the earliest.

Mr. Ponnanna also visited a few houses damaged in the rains and directed the revenue officials to release compensation as per government guidelines without delay.

The road works at Siddapura was also reviewed, and the contractor came under flak for the delay in completion. He noted that the work has been in progress for five to six months before the commencement of the rainy season and it remained incomplete till date causing inconvenience to the public.

Mr. Ponnanna also called on the family members of P.C. Vishnu of Badaga Banangala village who died due to tree-collapse following heavy rains recently.

He was told that the government had released ₹5 lakh as compensation to the family members. Mr. Ponnanna offered his condolences to the bereaved family members. Earlier, he also issued a letter sanctioning ₹5-lakh compensation to the family members of Gouri of Arji village who died under similar circumstances last week.
