Police officers and Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) personnel on Monday baton-charged protesters and fired tear gas shells and sound grenades after multiple mobs gathered outside Sheikh Hasina’s ancestral home in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi and attempted to tear down what remains of it.

Dhanmondi 32, the residence of Bangladesh’s founding father and Hasina’s father ‘Bangabandhu’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has long been a symbolic site. During the August 2024 uprising, large parts of the house were attacked and demolished by protesters.

Mobs returned to the site several times throughout the day on Monday, beginning moments after Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia at the end of a months-long trial that found her guilty of ordering a deadly crackdown on last year’s student-led uprising.

The interim government headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus described the verdict as a “historic" one, while urging the public to maintain calm and warning that any violence would be dealt with firmly.

In an emailed statement sent to media after the verdict, Hasina accused the court of being “biased and politically motivated".

“In their distasteful call for the death penalty, they reveal the brazen and murderous intent of extremist figures within the interim government to remove Bangladesh’s last elected prime minister, and to nullify the Awami League as a political force," she said.

The government had earlier dismissed her criticisms of the legal proceedings, saying the tribunal had been transparent, allowed observers and published regular documentation.

The interim government urged Bangladeshis to remain calm. The judgment “may naturally evoke strong emotions among the public", it said.

Several people on both sides were injured during the clashes. Vehicular movement along Dhanmondi 32 on Mirpur Road remained disrupted for nearly six hours, and most shops kept their shutters down as security forces took positions to prevent protesters from advancing toward Mujib’s house.

By around 11:30am on Monday, several hundred people — including students — had gathered near Dhanmondi 32 in a procession, chanting slogans against Sheikh Hasina, who was sentenced to death in the case linked to the atrocities during the July 2024 uprising that toppled the Awami League government that August.

Protesters brought two excavators with them, saying they intended to dismantle what remained of the structure. The house had already been partially demolished during demonstrations in February, months after it was first attacked and set on fire on August 5, 2024, in the immediate aftermath of Hasina’s fall.
