Mohamed Salah delivered the loudest reminder of his enduring class by scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner to hand Egypt a gripping 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe in their Africa Cup of Nations Group B opener in Agadir.

With his Liverpool future clouded by recent tension and a run of five straight games without a start under Arne Slot, Salah arrived at AFCON with plenty to prove.

He answered in the most decisive way possible, pouncing on a loose ball in the box and steering a precise finish past 40-year-old goalkeeper Washington Arubi to break Zimbabwean resistance at the death.

It was a moment straight out of Salah’s familiar script — calm under pressure, ruthless when it matters — and one that briefly pushed aside the uncertainty surrounding his Anfield standing.

Egypt had been rocked earlier when Prince Dube stunned the seven-time champions with a 20th-minute opener, before Omar Marmoush dragged them level just after the hour.

Yet with frustration mounting and time running out, it was Salah who stepped up, rescuing the Pharaohs and sparing them an embarrassing opening-night stumble, even as his club situation remains unresolved.

Left on the bench repeatedly by Slot and publicly claiming he had been “thrown under the bus," the 31-year-old has been linked with a January exit from Liverpool — but on this night, he was very much centre stage.

Victory lifts Egypt onto three points alongside South Africa at the top of Group B and fuels Salah’s personal quest for a first AFCON crown, after near-misses in 2017 and 2022.
