Despite its swift advance across most parts of the country, the southwest monsoon has unexpectedly stalled just short of the National Capital Region, delaying its arrival over Delhi. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon, which normally reaches Delhi by June 27, is now expected to take another 2–3 days to cover the city and the remaining parts of western Rajasthan.

This delay comes even as the monsoon has already spread across large swathes of northwest India, including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir. As of June 27, the northern limit of the monsoon passes through Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Jhunjhunu, and Sonipat — placing it right at the doorstep of the NCR.

In the meantime, Delhi continues to reel under sultry conditions. Over the past 24 hours, temperatures in the capital rose by 2 to 4°C, with maximums hovering between 35°C and 38°C, and minimums in the 26°C to 29°C range. Humidity levels also remain high, making conditions uncomfortable for residents.

The IMD has forecast no significant change in temperatures in the coming days, although cloudy skies may offer some respite.

Typically, the monsoon covers the entire country by July 8, and if forecasts hold, Delhi should receive its much-anticipated rains within the next few days.

Delhi NCR has not seen any significant pre-monsoon showers, with clouds arriving but leaving without delivering rain. This has led to a rise in temperatures. The increase in temperature, combined with high humidity and strong sunlight, will make conditions uncomfortable for residents.

In the past 24 hours, Delhi NCR has experienced intense sunlight and light winds, exacerbating the humidity and discomfort for people. During this monsoon season, the area has seen only sporadic cloud movements and light drizzles. The IMD predicts that this pattern will continue, with intermittent light rain forecasted until July 2.

The temperature readings for key areas in Delhi NCR on June 27 are as follows:

  • Delhi: Maximum 38°C / Minimum 26°C, AQI 103
  • Noida: Maximum 36°C / Minimum 28°C, AQI 108
  • Ghaziabad: Maximum 35°C / Minimum 29°C, AQI 112
  • Gurugram: Maximum 35°C / Minimum 29°C, AQI 100
  • Greater Noida: Maximum 36°C / Minimum 29°C, AQI 110
  • Faridabad: Maximum 35°C / Minimum 29°C, AQI 106
