Montha intensifies into Severe Cyclonic Storm; IMD issues red alert for coasts of Andhra, Odisha

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red warning for the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Yanam as the cyclonic storm ‘Montha’ over westcentral Bay of Bengal has intensified into Severe Cyclonic Storm on Tuesday morning (October 28, 2025).

In its 9 a.m. bulletin on Tuesday (October 28, 2025) the IMD said the Severe Cyclonic Storm is centred over the westcentral Bay of Bengal at 5.30 a.m., around 190 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 270 km south-southeast of Kakinada, 340 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam, all in Andhra Pradesh, and 550 km south-southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha.

It is likely to continue north-northwestwards and may cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada around Tuesday evening or night (October 28, 2025) as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph. Gale winds touching 90-100 kmph are likely along the Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday (October 28, 2025).

Heavy to very heavy rains with isolated extremely heavy rainfall are likely in the districts of Tirupati, SPSR Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, Guntur, NTR, Palnadu and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Other districts may receive very heavy rainfall.
