Two-time Olympian Elavenil Valarivan and army marksman Ravinder Singh delivered standout performances as India claimed multiple medals on the opening day of the ISSF World Championships (Pistol/Rifle) on Saturday.
Elavenil, 26, produced a nerve-wracking finish in the women’s 10m air rifle final to secure a bronze medal, while Ravinder captured gold in the men’s 50m free pistol, a non-Olympic event, marking the biggest triumph of his career.
Valarivan, who looked on course for the top spot after leading midway through the final, suffered heartbreak in the closing stages. A 10.0 on her 19th shot saw her slip to third, and a 9.9 on the 22nd ended her medal charge, finishing with 232.0 points. South Korea’s Ban Hyojin claimed gold with 255.0, followed by China’s Wang Zifei with 254.0.
The Indian women’s team of Elavenil, Meghana Sajjanar, and Shreya Agrawal added to the tally with a team bronze, scoring 1893.3. China (1901.7) and South Korea (1899.9) took gold and silver respectively.
Valarivan’s 633.4 in qualification secured her a place in the final, while Meghana and Shreya finished 17th and 33rd.
Meanwhile, Ravinder Singh, a 29-year-old Naik Subeadar from Bishnah, Jammu & Kashmir, topped the 50m pistol event with a brilliant total of 569, finishing ahead of South Korea’s Kim Cheongyong (556) and AIN shooter Anton Aristarkhov (556). The Indian Army marksman, who previously won bronze at the 2023 Worlds in Baku, showcased immense composure, recovering from a slow start of 93 to shoot consistent rounds of 98, 94, 95, 93, and 96 in a 47-shooter field.
Ravinder’s performance also powered India to a team silver, alongside Kamaljeet (540) and Yogesh Kumar (537), with a combined score of 1646. South Korea edged them for gold (1648), while Ukraine secured bronze (1644) among the 11 competing teams.
