In a shocking incident, a 50-year-old man allegedly pushed an 18-year-old college student from a moving train after boarding the ladies’ coach of a Mumbai local on Thursday. The accused, identified as Shaikh Akhtar, pushed the woman after female commuters asked him to deboard the Panvel-CSMT train. Subsequently, Akhtar was arrested by the Panvel Government Railway Police (GRP) under charges of attempted murder and violation of railway rules.

A resident of Usarli village in New Panvel, the victim was traveling with a female friend to their college in Kharghar when the incident was reported between Panvel and Khandeshwar railway stations.

According to Vijay Tayade, senior inspector, Panvel GRP, the victim was standing near the coach’s footboard pole when Nawaz, who refused to leave the ladies’ coach, turned violent and pushed her out of the train. Commuters immediately alerted the railway helpline. Nawaz was detained by GRP officers at Khandeshwar station.

It is learnt that the student fell about 1.5 km from Panvel station. The GRP team initially could not locate her on the tracks, but she had been taken to a nearby private hospital by residents. She sustained serious injuries to her head, waist, and limbs. However, her condition is said to be stable later.

The accused attempted to escape after getting off at Khandeshwar station, but alert passengers helped the railway police apprehend him.

Nawaz, who claimed to be homeless and residing around Khar-Bandra Road, appeared mentally disturbed during his arrest, SI Tayade said. Further, he was produced before the Panvel city court on Friday, which remanded him in police custody for three days. The FIR was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for attempted murder and the Indian Railways Act, which penalizes unauthorized male entry into women’s compartments.
