Mumbai received a brief respite from inclement weather on Tuesday after heavy rains lashed the city with the early arrival of the monsoon. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Wednesday in the city.

The weather agency has predicted a generally cloudy sky with moderate to heavy rain in Mumbai city and suburbs for Wednesday, with the possibility of thunder/lightning accompanied by gusty winds at isolated places. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely around 24 degrees.

Mumbai has been receiving record rainfall since last week, with the severe weather warning indicating an extremely heavy downpour of 204.5 mm on Monday. The incessant rainfall triggered waterlogging on roads and railway tracks and disrupted normal life.

Several flights and train services were delayed due to heavy rainfall. Airlines such as Air India and SpiceJet issued advisories for their passengers. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also asked residents to avoid going out unless absolutely necessary.

Despite a brief reprieve on Tuesday, there are no immediate reports of waterlogging across the city. The civic authorities and disaster management cells remained on high alert, urging citizens to exercise caution.

In the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning, the city recorded an average of 106 mm of rainfall, while the western suburbs received 72 mm and the eastern suburbs 63 mm, the BMC said, as the monsoon arrived in Mumbai 10 days before its anticipated date.

The downpour in Mumbai shattered the 107-year-old record for the month of May as the Colaba observatory recorded 295 mm of rainfall on Monday, the highest since the previous record of 279.4 mm recorded in May 1918.

Mumbai typically anticipates the monsoon’s arrival around June 11. This year’s onset shatters previous records, surpassing the May 29 arrivals in 1956, 1962, and 1971 by three days. Alongside Mumbai, Pune also saw the monsoon’s early advance.

Not only Mumbai, the sudden weather change led to heavy rainfall in parts of central Maharashtra, particularly in Pune and Satara districts. The report highlights that the Baramati, Daund, and Indapur regions in Pune district, as well as Phaltan in Satara district, recorded unusually high rainfall within a short span of time.
