The 40-year-old Mumbai school teacher, who was arrested for sexually assaulting a Class 11 student, will now undergo a psychiatric medical examination, Hindustan Times reported.

According to the report, the police informed a special court for POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) that they wished to get a medical examination of the teacher done to understand her mental health.

They said they speculate the teacher, during the course of the interrogation, may claim that she is mentally unfit, the report quoted an officer as saying.

The teacher was exposed after the parents of the minor student submitted a complaint, after learning that their son had been taking anti-anxiety medicines, given by the teacher.

Another female friend of the accused teacher, who was roped in to convince the student to meet the teacher in person, remains on the run and was yet to be arrested.

The HT report claimed that the police were planning to visit the school and speak to other batchmates of the student to know if any other students were also assaulted.

A team of the police was also interrogating medical shop owners to analyse the kind of medicines the teacher had offered to the student, days after he developed anxiety issues.

“The teacher has been telling us they are antidepressants, but we need to record statements of medical store owners," an officer was quoted.

MUMBAI TEACHER HAD RESIGNED IN 2024

As the investigations into the case progress, it has been learnt that the teacher had resigned from the Mumbai school in 2024, nearly five months after she had begun assaulting the student.

The police were quoted as saying that they would probe the reason for her resignation.

The report also quoted school sources as saying that the teacher had left the school after the management had expressed displeasure over her performance.

Meanwhile, the school teacher would be produced before a court again on Thursday, the report stated.

THE MUMBAI SCHOOL ASSAULT CASE

A Class 11 student at an elite Mumbai school first showed reluctance as he noticed a female teacher’s sexual advancements towards him.

As he kept ignoring him, the teacher asked one of her female friends, not associated with the school, to persuade the student to meet her. The friend of the teacher reportedly told the student that relationships between students and older women were common and that they were made for each other.

The student, once he agreed to meet the teacher in person, was allegedly picked up by the teacher in her sedan. She then used to drive him to various five-star hotels on multiple occasions and intoxicated him before their sexual encounters.

As months passed, the student started to develop anxiety issues and was subsequently offered anti-anxiety medicines by the teacher.

The assault went on for more than a year, and eventually, the parents of the student started noticing a change in his behaviour and confronted him. The student narrated his ordeal to them. However, they did not submit a formal complaint against the teacher, thinking that her contact with their son would eventually cut off as the student was to pass out of the school in a few months.

A complaint was submitted after the teacher attempted to reach out to the student again, after he had passed out the school.

She apparently tried to make contact with the student via his domestic help, conveying to him that she wanted to meet him again.

The woman teacher was booked under the POCSO Act, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Juvenile Justice Act, and was arrested.
